Heating your space is a must during the frigid winter months. However, improper use of many heating sources increases the possibility of a house fire.

Here at Carbon Valley Heating and Air, your safety is our priority. Use these tips to stay warm and safe in your home throughout the winter.

Service heating systems annually

Heating equipment is one of the leading causes of house fires, contributing to about 14% of all residential fires. We strongly recommend that you have your heating system checked and inspected every year to ensure that it is in good working order.

Through inspection, HVAC technicians at Carbon Valley Heating and Air in Boulder County can identify and repair problems; hence, reducing the risk of heating-related fires. They can also correct unsafe behaviors, which can contribute to fires

Install smoke alarms

Installing smoke alarms in your home goes a long way towards keeping you and your family safe from fire.  Of course, you want to make sure they are in good working order.

Test your smoke alarms every month to ensure that they are working properly in your Boulder home. Also, don’t forget to replace the batteries at least once a year, preferably before winter. To maintain full functionality, smoke detectors should be replaced every 7 to 10 years.

Fireplace safety

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 25,000 fires start in the fireplace each year. As such, we recommend that you schedule yearly maintenance checks in your Boulder County home to ensure safety. Also, always keep combustibles away from the fireplace. Use a safety screen to prevent embers from escaping and starting a fire. Most importantly, always put out the fire in your fireplace before you go to sleep or leave the house.
