Summer begins this month, and things are going to heat up fast. If you’re not careful, your energy costs could skyrocket and leave you with a hefty bill to pay.
There are several ways to reduce energy costs and consumption around the house, but most homeowners aren’t sure where to start. That’s okay – we’re here to help!
Use our home energy checklist to see what needs to be done; your wallet will thank you for it!
Home Energy Checklist
Heating and Cooling:
- Clean your air vents regularly
- Change HVAC filters
- Open all vents
- Seasonally rotate ceiling fan blades
- Replace faulty weatherstripping on doors and windows
- Add insulation to attic and roofing systems
- Purchase a thermostat that is programmable
- Wrap water heater with an insulated blanket
- Clean outdoor AC unit
Lighting:
- Use natural light instead of overhead lighting
- Use efficient lightbulbs
- Install timers and motion detectors on outdoor lighting systems
- Use solar lights for your landscape and garden
Appliances:
- Wash clothing with cold water
- Clean our dryer vents regularly
- Dry laundry on a clothes line
- Make sure your appliances are ENERGY STAR rated
- Clean refrigerator coils
Electronics:
- Upgrade electronics to more efficient models
- Shut down computers when not in use
- Turn off power strips when not in use
- Unplug high-powered appliances and electronics when not in use
- Unplug your smartphones, tablets and laptops when fully charged
