When Should You Replace Your Furnace Filter?

When Should You Replace Your Furnace Filter?A dirty filter causes your furnace to work harder to heat your home. This makes your heating system inefficient and since a filter is designed to trap contaminants such as dust, mold, and dander, it can also hurt your health.

When Should You Replace Your Furnace Filter?

A clean furnace filter is crucial to your HVAC systems efficiency and your homes comfort. Unfortunately, a lot of homeowners don’t give them much thought. Often, they forget to replace them for months (or even years) at a time.

There are several factors to consider when determining how often you need to change your filters. Factors include the type of filter you use, the number of inhabitants in your home, how dusty your home is, the presence of pets, and how frequently you use your furnace.

If you live in an area with freezing temperatures and your furnace runs 24/7, you’ll need to replace your filter every few weeks. If you only use it for a few hours a day, your filter is probably good for the entire season. Dust and the type of filter you have can also affect the performance of your HVAC system. If you get a lot of dust in your home and you’re using a 4-inch filter, it will be good for about 2 months. 1 to 2-inch filters will need to be replaced on a monthly basis.

Homeowners who live with pets will need to change their furnace filters more frequently than those who have none. If you have only one pet, your filter can last for about a month or two. But if you have lots of pets, your filter will need to be replaced every few weeks to once a month.

Ideally, furnace filters should be replaced every 1 to 3 months. To be sure, we suggest that you check them every month and then change them when they’re dirty.

When was the last time you replaced your furnace filter? If you haven’t changed it in a while, now is the best time to do so.
